MediTrace
Real-time visibility of medicine stock
Overview

MediTrace is transforming access to critical medicines by connecting patients, clinicians, and pharmacies through real-time visibility. Our mission is to eliminate uncertainty and wasted journeys, ensuring every prescription reaches the right place at the right time. MediTrace focuses exclusively on critical, life-dependent medicines where every delay can have serious consequences.

With a simple, data-driven interface, MediTrace empowers patients to locate essential medications quickly and confidently while supporting pharmacies with accurate, up-to-date demand insight.

Step 1 - Prescription Step 2 - Location Step 3 - Results Step 4 - Reserve
The Challenge

Although the NHS has the Spine, which connects GP, pharmacy, and prescription services nationally, it does not currently provide live information on pharmacy stock levels. This gap means patients, carers, and clinicians cannot see where critical medicines are available in real time. Stock arrives, moves, and runs out of sync, creating uncertainty and delays.

Patients with urgent prescriptions are often left travelling between pharmacies or waiting days for essential medicines. These inefficiencies place added strain on patients and families, increase pressure on pharmacists, and reduce the overall effectiveness of NHS services. For those with life-critical prescriptions, every delay has serious consequences.

MediTrace addresses this gap by providing:

  • Real-time visibility of pharmacy stock levels
  • Confidence for clinicians when prescribing
  • Faster access to medicines for patients
  • Efficient demand management for pharmacies
Why We Started

Born from lived experience, MediTrace was created to solve the stress and uncertainty patients face when trying to access essential medicines. Delays, shortages, and wasted journeys are more than inconveniences; they are risks to health. Our mission is to bring clarity, speed, and confidence to the prescription journey.

In 2023 our founder became critically ill with COVID and spent six months in hospital, including two months in a coma. Recovery is ongoing following a diagnosis of COVID-induced encephalitis.

In 2025, after testing positive for COVID-19 again, he was urgently prescribed Paxlovid, an antiviral medication that must be taken within five days of symptoms. Despite the urgency, securing the medication proved extremely difficult, forcing him and his family to make countless calls and visits to find available stock. This experience highlighted a systemic gap that MediTrace is now built to close.

Critical Medicines

MediTrace is designed specifically for critical and life-dependent medicines that must be dispensed quickly to protect patient health. These are prescriptions issued by authorised clinicians and supplied through registered NHS pharmacies, where delays in access can lead to significant deterioration or hospitalisation.

In clinical terms, a medicine is considered critical when:

  • It must be taken within a short therapeutic window (often within hours or days of diagnosis).
  • Interruptions in supply could cause serious health risk or treatment failure.
  • It supports ongoing management of long-term or acute conditions where continuity is vital.

Examples of medicine categories MediTrace supports include:

  • Antivirals and Antimicrobials – e.g. Paxlovid, Oseltamivir (Tamiflu), Valaciclovir.
  • Immunosuppressants – e.g. Tacrolimus, Mycophenolate Mofetil, Ciclosporin.
  • Oncology and Chemotherapy Agents – e.g. Methotrexate, Capecitabine, Hydroxyurea.
  • Cardiac and Anticoagulant Therapies – e.g. Apixaban, Clopidogrel, Bisoprolol, Amiodarone.
  • Endocrine and Diabetic Medications – e.g. Insulin types, Levothyroxine, Hydrocortisone.
  • Respiratory and Asthma Treatments – e.g. Salbutamol, Fostair, Prednisolone.
  • Neurological and Epilepsy Medications – e.g. Levetiracetam, Lamotrigine, Carbamazepine.

These medicines often require urgent administration, dose stability, or continuous supply. MediTrace prioritises these items by integrating with NHS prescription systems to provide real-time visibility of where they are available and ready for collection.

Our Solution

Step 1 – Prescription details

The journey begins with the prescribed medicine and dosage. MediTrace reads the prescription details and prepares a secure search for live stock at nearby pharmacies. Nothing is reserved at this step; the goal is clarity about what is needed.

Step 1 - Prescription Details

Step 2 – Location search

Patients can use GPS or enter a postcode to find pharmacies within a chosen radius. MediTrace filters results by live stock availability and distance.

Step 2 - Location Search

Step 3 – Pharmacy results

Available pharmacies are displayed with distance, opening hours, and ratings. Patients can select their preferred pharmacy and proceed to reserve the medicine.

Step 3 - Pharmacy Results

Step 4 – Reserve stock

With one tap, the prescription is reserved at the selected pharmacy. Patients and pharmacies receive instant confirmation and a collection time, completing the process with confidence.

Step 4 - Reserve Stock
Where We Fit

MediTrace bridges the gap between patients, clinicians, and pharmacies through the NHS digital ecosystem.

By connecting directly with the NHS Spine and Electronic Prescription Service (EPS), MediTrace enables real-time visibility of live pharmacy stock.

  • Patients can instantly see where their prescription is available.
  • Clinicians can prescribe with confidence knowing medicines can be located and reserved quickly.
  • Pharmacies can manage demand efficiently, reducing wasted stock and improving fulfilment accuracy.

MediTrace acts as the secure link between all three, ensuring that prescriptions, supply, and collection align seamlessly through verified NHS data connections.
